Bandini Automobili bears the name of its creator, Ilario Bandini — a true engineer-driver who, from 1946 onwards in Forlì (Emilia-Romagna), built some of the most characterful sports cars of post-war Italy. At a time when lightness, mechanical simplicity and intelligent design defined success, Bandini stood at the very forefront. His construction philosophy — minimalist, rigorously thought through and uncompromisingly performance-driven — would influence an entire generation of Italian sports car builders.

Bandini was no armchair constructor. He understood racing from the inside, and it showed in every car he produced. Sharp, fast and dependable, his machines earned a formidable reputation both in Europe and in the United States. The Bandini Siluro models in particular — powered by high-revving 750 cc engines and distinguished by their dramatic wheel arches — proved highly successful. In 1955 and 1957 they secured SCCA class victories in the United States, firmly establishing the marque’s international standing. Ilario Bandini himself competed in over sixty races, including multiple entries in the Mille Miglia between 1947 and 1965, achieving no fewer than 19 victories and 18 podium finishes.

This example was originally commissioned new by Alex Raymond, the legendary creator of Flash Gordon and Rip Kirby. Campaigned in SCCA events in Connecticut and on Long Island, the car remained active in competition after Raymond’s untimely death in 1956. Among its subsequent drivers was George Tipsword, who finished an impressive 7th overall in the H/Modified category in 1957. Thereafter, the Bandini passed through the hands of several conscientious custodians before entering the renowned Fendt Collection in 2007.

A meticulous, fully documented restoration by D&D Classic Automobile Restoration returned the car to its correct original specification, including the proper cycle wings. The quality of this work was recognised with a class win at Ault Park in 2009, an invitation to Amelia Island in 2010, and further honours at concours events in Italy and Germany.

Today the car is fitted with twin Weber 34 ICH carburettors; the rare original carburettor — recently professionally rebuilt — accompanies the car. Holding a FIVA Identity Card (A/3), this Bandini is fully eligible for all major historic events. An exceptionally authentic Siluro with genuine race history and outstanding provenance — a car for the true connoisseur.
