Bandini‑Maserati Barchetta 1953 — Unique Competition Barchetta
This car is singular in the Bandini story: a rare “large‑chassis” barchetta with aluminium coachwork by Motto and the only one originally intended to carry a Maserati engine. It combines Bandini design and Maserati power in a one‑off package that is immediately recognisable and historically compelling with a genuine competition pedigree in the United States.
Racing pedigree and provenance
Built by Bandini in 1953 and bodied by Motto, the car was shipped to the USA in 1954 and campaigned extensively in SCCA events. Notable period results include 1st at Thompson (29/05/1955) and winner of the 1‑hour at Thompson (29/06/1956), alongside multiple national entries (Sebring 1955 entry, Nassau Speed Week 1955). Ownership in the USA is well documented through seven successive owners, culminating with Peter Markowski (Vermont), who fitted the present A6 1.5‑litre Maserati engine during his 1990s ownership. The car returned to Italy in 2002 and underwent a full, sympathetic restoration by Borghi in Milan under Bandini expert supervision in 2003.
Mechanical and authenticity notes
The car’s history is layered: it was exported without an engine and fitted in period with different powerplants (evidence points to an early Maserati 4‑cylinder, later a Bugatti 4‑cylinder, and today an A6 Maserati 1.5‑litre). The Bandini Registro Storico lists the car as number 002, and the Bandini certificate confirms it as an original 1953 Bandini built by Ilario Bandini. The present A6 engine is a correct period Maserati unit (A6 family, production 1947–1950) and delivers the authentic 6-cylinder Maserati sound and character that make this barchetta so special on the road and track.
Condition, restoration and documentation
Fully restored by Borghi Milano with oversight from Bandini specialists, the car returns to the market well documented: restoration invoices, photographs, owner correspondence and the Bandini certification letter accompany the sale. Cosmetic and mechanical work was executed to a high standard, preserving period detail (Motto aluminium body, triple twin Weber carburation on the current engine) while ensuring reliability for historic events.
Why buy and suggested use
This Bandini‑Maserati is a rare opportunity for a collector who values authenticity, competition history and theatrical presence. It is ideal for historic racing, hillclimbs, and prestigious concours where provenance and period correctness matter. With its Maserati A6 voice, aluminium coachwork and documented SCCA history, the car offers both competitive potential and display appeal.
