Newsletter July 2021 - 95 Years Carrozzeria Touring (founded in Milan in 1926)

The history of Carrozzeria Touring is one of 2 generations (father Felice Bianchi Anderloni & his son Carlo Felice Bianchi Anderloni) of industrial design, creativity, forerunner of trends, and innate taste.

The fact that the newly founded Carrozzeria Touring acquired almost immediately the licence for the Weymann Construction System (a light coachbuilding system combining a flexible wooden frame with exterior covering in coated fabric which as an extra was noiseless) proved that innovation stood high on the company’s priority list.

With Felice Bianchi Anderloni’s adage “weight is the enemy, air resistance the obstacle” , Carrozzeria Touring succombed at the beginning of the 30-ies automatically to an aerodynamic affliction intelligently translated in socially acceptable curvelinear forms. These new aerodynamic designs obtained the jury’s seal of approval at the 1933 Como’s Concours d’Elegance.

Towards the end of the 30-ies, the now famous “Superleggera” construction system first emerged, characterised by the replacement of the wooden body with a lattice frame made of thin steel tubes with the choice of aluminium as a covering material.

This stylistic formula is clearly illustrated by the sensational lines of the Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 Berlinetta exhibited at the 1937 Milan Motor Show.

The Superleggera’s unique combination of elegance and sporting efficiency allowed automobile constructors, of whom the competition cars were fitted with similar bodies to win the major road races at that time.
