The Mk3 is the latest evolution from the legendary British 'Big Healey' series.
According to connoisseurs, the most refined and comfortable Austin Healey. A user-friendly convertible roof and easily operated side sliding windows mean that the BJ8's comfort is a lot higher than previous models. Several earlier 3000 models still had removable side windows and a roof system with brackets fitted.
Between 1964 and 1967, 17,700 examples of the BJ8 Convertible were built at BMC in Abingdon, UK. Which clearly indicated the high demand and success of this iconic model.
Technical details
Production of this Austin Healey 3000 started on 23 October 1964. Just a week later on 30 October 1964, the car left the factory towards its first owner in California, USA. Typical of an original American-delivered car is that they were often well equipped. This one is no exception; factory records for this 3000 mention: wire wheels, overdrive, heater, adjustable steering column, laminated windscreen, black tonneau cover.
In the early 1990s, the car was imported to Germany. Due to the warm climate on the US west coast, the car was kept well-preserved and spared from rust. Nevertheless, the car could use some much-needed freshening up. The then German owner decided to fully restore the car. Testimony to this are the pack of invoices present for all ordered parts and the photos from during the works. Since 2008, the car has been in Belgium with its last long-term owner.
The paintwork and restoration work was well done, as evidenced by the quality the car is in today. The mighty roar of the 6-in-line engine of this handsome 'sports convertible' is music to your ears.
