1965 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 4.2L FHC Coupé
It was already clear at its launch in 1961, and even today, a good sixty years later, everyone still agrees: the E-Type Series 1 Coupé is the Jaguar style icon! For many, the most beautiful car ever built. But beauty isn't everything, and they understood that at Jaguar headquarters too. So they made sure the E-Type was at least as phenomenal to drive as it was to look at.
The first series of the E-Type is undoubtedly the purest of the three models. Initially built in two versions; an FHC (Fixed Head Coupé) and OTS (Open Two Seater) and powered by a 3.8-litre six-in-line engine from the very last XK150 3.8 S. From October 1964, this engine was updated to a 4.2-litre version.
This 4.2-litre engine produced the same 265 horsepower and top speed as its predecessor but had higher torque. This translated into more power at lower revs and more comfortable driving. In addition, the gearbox, generator, braking system and cooling system were also improved. In the interior, from then on we found seats with adjustable backrests where the previous series was rather rudimentary in adjustment options.
So the 4.2-litre version represents 'the best of both worlds' in terms of E-Type. The wonderful lines of the 'primal E-Type' model that are hard to distinguish from the 3.8-litre version and the improved technology where the teething problems of the 3.8 have already been ironed out.
This matching numbers E-Type coupé is like a rolling work of art. On 14 May 1965, the car was prepared for a trip to the United States of America where its first owner eagerly awaited the arrival of his new car. Mr Joseph Knebs from Largo, Florida had ordered his E-Type in a colour combination of the fresh "Primrose Yellow" and a black leather interior.
The current French owner purchased the car in 2012 in completely original and authentic condition, but in need of a full restoration. This car proved to be a perfect base... Still in original colours and fully matching numbers.
When choosing the colours, they decided to go for a new but venerable combination; "Jaguar Battleship Grey" combined with a red leather interior. An original Jaguar colour combination that was used on XK models, among others. This contemporary colour combination can even be called modern. In our opinion, a unique touch that makes this car just that little bit more special.
Since this restoration, which started in 2013 and was completed at the end of 2015, the owner has handled his favourite car very sparingly. Just 7,700 kilometres ticked the reconditioned odometer and the next owner will reap the rewards. A rare opportunity to purchase an E-Type Series 1 4.2L FHC in new condition. Perhaps a nice analogue alternative to replace yet another modenr sports car? A true gentleman sports car!
